There are two main carotenoids in the eye and Lutein is one of these. It is contained in the eye pigment. It acts as a light filter protecting the eye from the sunlight or, to be exact, from the aggressive part of the light spectrum. As it was said above, Lutein is a biologically active fat-soluble pigment that belongs to the group of carotenoids – natural compounds that play an important role in the metabolism of the human body. It is recommended to consume it with high-fat food for better absorption.
Though it is considered that this supplement should be taken for age-related macular degeneration, there is no scientific proof of this fact. There is no exact information concerning the association of a higher dose of lutein and efficacy of AMD treatment.
